Raider GE78 HX 13V repaste question
Thinking about repasting my Raider GE78 laptop after a recent attempt at an initial repaste. I haven't seen much gains as temps seem to sit around 85-95c when playing games, as I also experience the occasional microstutter and one-second pause from time to time. I feel like I might've messed something up.
So, quick rundown: I was facing some issues with my laptop shutting down on me out of nowhere when playing certain games, namely Gundam Breaker 4 and Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. I never checked my temps at the time, so I had no idea how hot the laptop was at the time, but it felt pretty warm to the touch, to say the least. So, to err on the side of caution, I opted to buy some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and Honeywell PTM7950 for the CPU/GPU and VRAM chips respectively. While the Kryonaut went on pretty well (and I don't regret repasting the CPU/GPU, since the preinstalled paste was dry as hell), the same can't be said for my application of the 7950, as I didn't know you had to refrigerate/freeze the material first, so it was a pain in the ass to apply, but on top of that, I had the "smart" idea of chopping it into small pieces to place on each VRAM chip, instead of just covering all of them wholesale with a large piece. Rookie mistake, I know. After just doing one row, I opted to put the heatsink back on, as I was stressed out and tired at the time and there was still some putty that I didn't wipe off and hadn't dried up yet, so I figured that could still be used as-is.
TL;DR: I think my recent repaste did more potential harm than good. What should I do? I've been eyeballing getting some U6 PRO thermal putty for the VRAM chips, as well as potentially more Kryonaut and spreading it manually this time, though I've heard that PTM7950 is better for the CPU and GPU long-term when it comes to laptops.
